SNA Breakthrough update

For those that don't know, the SNA Breakthrough is responsible for going out to schools and creating an interest in the Nursing profession. Kewanee Williams is our Breakthrough and she's been very busy this semester visiting schools. She's been a self-starter from the beginning, contacting schools, setting up dates, and making presentations. Here are some pics from a career fair at Schillings Farm Middle School in Collierville on Thursday.

Dominican Republic Trip

Lawrette Axley, PhD, RN, CNE

Are you looking for a way to use your “gifts, knowledge and skills” in nursing?

Would you like to have an unforgettable experience in working with families from a different culture in “their country”?

Consider participating in the “Nursing for Diverse Cultures” course……

Some of the ‘basic’ Important Information:

• Each semester faculty and students travel to the Dominican Republic during the fall and spring break to provide basic medical care for highly impoverished families.
• Students who have completed Foundations level courses may enroll in the course.
• Cost for the trip is approximately $1400 which covers air travel/hotel/meals and transportation

We work in partnership with the Foundation for Peace International

What will you do?
Ambulatory clinics are set up ‘remotely’ for families in the city of Baharona, the Batey Algodon and Palo Bonita, a remote community of coffee bean farmers and families

What will you see?

So much it is hard to describe……many health problems including dysentery, GI upset, skin problems, malnutrition, Upper Respiratory problems, wounds etc……

The nurses assess and treat everyone who comes to the clinic. You will see and experience things you have only read about in a textbook.
If interested please email Dr. Lawrette Axley: naxley@memphis.edu

Do you speak Spanish fluently? This is a great opportunity for you! If you don’t we still need you – we hire translators!

P.S. You may also participate in the trip without being enrolled in the course….and possibly earn clinical credit (designated courses only)

In the evenings you can enjoy the beach and pools to ‘rest up’. It is not “all work”!

Student Nurses' Association Blog

Welcome to the new SNA blog. Traditionally the SNA historian has created a “scrapbook.” Instead of scrapbooking I decided to create a blog that any member could access 24/7 and see what the SNA has been up to, as well as look through the archive of pictures and posts from previous semesters (of course there’s no archive yet). The Historian will transfer administration of the blog to their successor and the blog will remain in SNA control. To the left there is a place to subscribe using your email address, this will send you an email alert whenever a new post has been made, please subscribe. Do not use your e-courseware email, please use your Memphis.edu or private email address since e-courseware will not allow outside emails. If you use a Reader, you can subscribe to our RSS feed as well (for an explanation of what a feed and a reader are click on the "What is a feed" link). Posts will be made outlining meetings with pictures as well as when ever SNA or school related news is available. Also there is an RSS feed with links to the Daily Helmsman on the left. If anyone has any questions or suggestions about the blog please email me at Memphissna@gmail.com.

Edit: Added a calendar to the bottom of the page that will have SNA meetings, functions, and activities on it for quick reference. The calendar will be updated as dates are set.
